What is your most flexible and useful product?

Obviously the answer depends upon the intended application, thus the answer includes;

      • Applications for pedestrian lighting
        • A combination of ground flashers and S1 R/W with YH-HL and YH-BA for hazards barriers. Generally steady however, for more distinctive visibility, blinking or flashing light mode s may be applicable.
      • Vehicular lighting
        • A combination of S1 R/W and YH-DD2 and YH-YS in all modes.
Note: All lights are virtually maintenance free for at least 10 years and may be relocated upon completion of short term applications.

How will SolarOne products benefit Public and Community infrastructure usage?

Used to make off-grid public infrastructure such as pathways, walks, shared pedestrian and cyclist pathways, gardens, wet lands, eco-tourism, sanctuaries, etc,. more attractive and safer for users such that evening and night times usage may then be approriate for those who are time scarce and value the evening for excercise, star-gazing, etc.

Environmentally friendly products, such as ours, can not only facilitate better usage of currently underutilised community assets, but generate significant and measurable other benefits by making it better for people to walk and ride. Further beneficial flow-on effects are good for the environment, as well as the community’s health and wellbeing.

To deliver the highest level of services SolarOne has set as our benchmark, we has designed our products specifically to meet Australian conditions and municipal and government’s infrastructure mangements’ needs. Our concepts have been derived from over two years of practical research with councils and bicycle user group members.

To make sure that our products are the best for Australia, SolaOne has entered into collaboration with a number of motor car component manufacturers seeking new opportunites in the renewable energy market place.

The benefits of such work may be of great assistance to help Australia create new industries in the future, however now, the major benefit that SolarOne offers clients is a product that will deliver, with certainty, a good job for a long time.

The mechanics of quality design often require adaptation of existing, cutting edge technology to meet new needs and to make sure that they do so with minimal harm or cost.

The first significant benefit is the money saving gained through utilizing a new technology for the energy storage component . SolarOne use devices that store electricity like a rechargeable battery however as they last for over 50,000 cycle of charge and discharge they far outlast batteries and have no toxic residue. They are called Ultra Capacitors.

Ultracapacitors are very efficient at storing and delivering energy, but, unlike rechargeable batteries, their ability to store and deliver that energy declines very little with age and use; thus the SolarOne devices are almost maintenance free for life. This means that they can be permanently installed in even unserviceable locations and then forgotten about. In addition to this, the ultracapacitors are made of non-hazardous, non-polluting materials, which present no environmental hazards or human safety concerns.

The solar cells built into SolarOne’s products will collect enough energy, even if not located in direct sunlight or on rainy days, to power the lights for at least 12 hours. So they also save energy because they do not need to be connected to a commercial power grid. They are much easier to install than any other outside lighting, since they do not need to be wired to a power source; or have rechargeable batteries replaced periodically.

In addition to this, the elegant beauty of their simple design and their inviting soft glow will make them a welcome addition to the nightscaping decor for any park or garden, open space, driveway or walkway. They will most certainly become both the latest style and set a new trend for environmentally aware lighting.

How are SolarOne products used to benefit Mining and associated Construction industries?

Major infrastructure users such as mining companies, ports, airports, railways, and so on, often require many kilometers of roadworks for access, ingress, egress, transport and movement. And most of these facilties operate on a 24 hours 7 days basis. In the process, many such sites incur significant costs to provide grid supplied electrical power or lighting and safety signage, and, particualrly in the case of remote facilities, this can be very costly.

Recent political decisions related to GHG and Carbon abatement and emmision generator taxes have placed even greater stress on organisation seeking a balance between responsible safety, the environment and operating costs. And, of course, add to this the corporate imaging preferences and options, the “good-will killer” effect, for those branded by the public as pollution emmitters.

According to data collected from a number of mining resources, there are many immediate requirements for sustainable lighting for applications such as haulage raods on mining sites. It is generally agreed that around 60% of operational costs for open cut/pits mines is incurred by the transport of mined materials for procesing or shipping. A lot of risk exposure from just one of the many elements comprising a mining operation.

The passage-way for such trucking movement is considered off-limits for any other than those with special clearances. With over two hundreds tonnes of ore carrying trucks using the roads every hour of the day, day and night, there is always the risk of accidents. And at night with the reduced visibility what is normally dangerous can become even more so.

Having learned from our work with delineation lighting techniques for Local Government and industry applications, when SolarOne was approached by the mining indutries in late 2010 we began to explore the nature of haulage road delineation for mines. After some months of research, product development and field trials, SolarOne has developed a delineation application that meets the highly critcal needs of haulage road management and that has the acceptance of mining industries OH&S profesionals.

Cost benefit analysis clearly show that with its estimated life time of at least 10 years, cost per kilometer to install and run, SolarOne FrontLIners is around $3/day per kilometer.

SolarOne’s FrontLiner is the only one of its breed in the world that has this peerage and attributes and it is an Australian product designed using Australian know how.

How are SolarOne products used to directly reduce greenhouse gases and support the environment?

For municipal infrastructure lighting SolarOne’s products may be used to complement existing street lighting such that their power usage may be altered reducing their light output with the difference being made with SolarOne lights. The result being an equally suitable lighting array and an overall saving of power and thus less greenhouse gases.

A good example of lighting profligacy is railway station lighting. For the large percentage of the night time in most instances the station is devoid of travellers and having the large flood lights lighting vacant space throughout the night is inexcusable. A rationalization of user needs versus lighting techniques could only achieve a positive outcome.

Another example is bicycle paths. These are often of low priority for councils to light and the lack of lighting discourages extended evening or nighttime usage because they are hazardous and dangerous. Ironically, often bicyclists are blinded by some overhead street lighting and have to ride into the pitch black oncoming traffic paths. Poor fencing, low hanging branches, blind corners, drop aways, other cyclists, holes, drains, and so on are invisible to many at night. Thus a perfectly good carriageway is wasted and the environmental benefits turn off after dark as people are forced to drive cars when some well placed, ground level lighting, would overcome the problems and avoid the necessity of fuel burning alternatives.

Another example is environmentally sensitive paths and walkways. Often these are unattractive without lighting and the only alternative street or bollard lighting, upsets the microcosm’s natural cycles and affects the resident wildlife. With the SolarOne lighting the paths remain safe by night and the locals are not disturbed. A win-win. Beach side pathways, forest eco-tourism tracks, nature reserves, parks and gardens and so on. There are almost no limits.

It is sad to observe that many cities simply continue to run their street lighting, often during daylight hours, burning fossil fuels. A simple audit of their lighting infrastructure fuel usage would justify the implementation of a combination of technologies that get the same lighting results, however with a dramatic reduction of greenhouse emissions.

Solid State Lighting – How easy are they to install?

SolarOne products are simple enough for a competent tradesman to install requiring minimum tools and experience. Some installation may require core drilling of thick concrete however this is routine stuff for professionals. Most certainly your local contractors such as brick and tile layers, will have no problems, however if you need help simply contact SolarOne.

Each product come with installation drawings and tips and traps to be aware of.

Do they meet with the Standards Australia recommendations?

Because the technology is new many institutions haven’t as yet redefined their standards to accomodate the latest application. The relevant standard in Australia is AS/ANZ 58.1.1. that deals with street and pathway lighting and SolarOne is preparing a proposal to upgrade this standard to cover SolarOne lighting using case study material gleaned from over two years of studies. This proposal will be submitted mid 2010 subsequent to new trials in Q2 2012.
